Landscaping / Forestry

Individuals who choose to study Landscaping / Forestry will receive training from Greening of Detroit, which was recently awarded a “2010 Michigan Green Leaders” award from the Detroit Free Press.  Greening will help trainees attain the Landscape Industry Certification, a State of Michigan certification that is provided by the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA).  This certification is recognized in both the USA and Canada.

In order to complete the certification, trainees will go through a 8 week program that will give them knowledge of forestry, watering, pruning, proper tool usage, heavy equipment use / repair, tree planting and identification, tree staking, and basic plant identification and information.  Testing for the certification occurs in September of every year.  Eligible trainees will also be awarded the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate.

During the 8 week certification process, trainees will report to Greening of Detroit headquarters, 1481 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48216.  Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Greening of Detroit will provide transportation to their Meyer Nursery for hands on training.  There will also be educational field trips where trainees can exercise their landscaping and forestry skills on City of Detroit property.

Throughout the training process and afterwards Southwest Solutions will provide additional supportive services to participants.  Each trainee will be in contact with a case manager who will work to remove any obstacles to meaningful employment, such as transportation or childcare issues.  Southwest Solutions also employs a Job Developer who works to cultivate employment opportunities for trainees, and a Workforce Development Coach who meets with trainees to develop their resumes, improve interview skills in order to increase employability.
